What questions would you ask a wise established business entrepreneur?

Tomorrow I’m meeting an established business entrepreneur and looking for some inspiration as to the questions I could ask him relating to business?

I would ask him “if you started a business tomorrow, what would you do differently this time?”

Or “any great software you simply couldn’t do without?”

Or “any brilliant books I should read?”

Or “have you got any contacts in China you would like to share with me?”

These are the questions I would ask if I were in your shoes. I don’t think one meeting would be long enough!

What’s your best advice on starting a bakery business.?

A friend and I are thinking about starting a Cake/cupcakes business. What’s your advice? How do we start? What does it take?

There are books on starting your own bakery and some of these can also give you an idea on production techniques and costs for a bakery business, some might also tell you about the equipment needed to start a bakery. One or two might also tell you what that equipment will cost. It is highly unlikely though, because most, if not all books are re-writes of books on how to start a business, which are books with generic subjects and talk of Widgets.

Virtualization: Fitting a Large Idea Into a Small Business

Virtualization: Fitting a Large Idea Into a Small Business

The term “virtualization” is easy to dismiss as yet another in a long string of high-tech buzzwords. However, implementing virtualization in your small business can result in real-world savings, increased efficiency, and the ability to concentrate on what really matters- running your business. Once the domain of big companies with deep capital, the combination of inexpensive or free virtualization packages and the accessibility of powerful computing resources available today make virtualization a useful (and increasingly common) tool for small businesses.

What Is Virtualization?
While virtual machines can be created on desktop computers, the most common implementation is known as “server virtualization”.

Most applications – even on busy servers – are rarely used to their full capacity and potential. Virtualization is, at its most basic level, the process of splitting or partitioning a computer into different, distinct virtual computers. The computer is physically a single machine, but the virtual computers can interact with devices, users, software or networks as if it were a separate machine.

Virtualization can also work the other way as well. If you have a number of computers or servers, virtualization software can combine these individual machines into one single virtual computer.

How Can My Small Business Benefit from Virtualization?
First and foremost, the less time or money you spend on managing individual machines, the more resources you can apply to your number one priority: managing the business. However, the benefits can be roughly grouped into a number of broad, overlapping categories:

1. It can be cheaper.
The arithmetic is simple- if you have several virtual machines on one physical machine; you have already saved the expense of purchasing multiple servers. But the savings go further, as you can minimize the space devoted to your server room, recovering valuable office space and avoiding future renovations or retrofits. Similarly, having fewer physical machines to administer can result in decreased costs on software or hardware upgrades, and fewer hours spent on IT consultants.

1) It can help you go green.
Savings on electricity costs would obviously fit into the above category, but there is a real environmental benefit to using fewer machines as well. Even today’s efficient servers draw plenty of power, and reducing the number of machines you require results in a smaller electrical bill. Servers also generate plenty of heat, and the air conditioning costs to cool your server room grow exponentially with the addition of each new server.

2) It can save you time.
Fewer physical machines means less time spent on physical maintenance. Similarly, a new virtual machine can be set up quickly and easily, while the deployment of a new physical server can be a lengthy and frustrating experience. When virtualization is used to pool many devices into a single virtual storage device, backups and recovery can be much quicker and easier.

How Much Will it Cost and What can I do to get started?
Virtualization can cost as much – or as little – as you like. There are a plethora of free and open source virtualization implementations available to choose from, and a technically savvy user could deploy a virtualization environment with ease. Those who are a little less confident in their abilities will find all manner of paid software available that include help and support services. Some businesses like V&C Solutions, Inc even specialize in coming to your office and implementing the technology for you.

Final Thoughts
Virtualization is, like any investment in IT, an important decision to make. The benefits of Virtualization can vary depending on the complexity of infrastructure of your business. Similarly to other IT investments, virtualization comes with its own set of challenges. However, a quick review of your current set-up is time well spent.

Consider how your current physical resources are being utilized – do you have a number of different servers doing different tasks, but also spending significant time sitting idle? If so, virtualization may be an option worth pursuing.

A quick web search will reveal a large number of virtualization packages, but the following list of free platforms can get your research started on the right foot:

• Oracle VM – Oracle’s virtualization offering can run a number of Windows- and Linux-based server operating systems.
• Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 – Microsoft’s most recent offering runs on XP and Vista and allows for a basic but robust virtualization environment.
• VirtualBox 3.0 – Sun Microsystems latest runs on an impressive range of operating systems and hardware architectures, placing it amongst the most versatile of free packages.
• Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 – This is a powerful platform that runs directly on the underlying hardware (unlike some other options which require a “host” operating system). It does, however, require specific hardware, so ensure your equipment meets the specifications.
• VMware ESXi 4.0 – A bare bones – but fully functional – virtualization platform that uses the same technology as its larger commercial cousin, VMware’s ESX Server.

idea to start small business

idea to start small business
Is it a good idea to start a small business in this economic climate?

I’ve been considering setting up a small business for the past couple of years having done professional drapery training at an evening class. Fear has prevented me doing it so far! As it’s in the field of soft furnishings it could be marketed in terms of home improvement in preference to moving. Should I take the bull by the horns and go for it in my spare time? I have no intention of giving up full time job – I’m not that mad! I’d really appreciate any advice anyone can share with me. Thanks

Working at home is usually either about working for a normal company from home or just working for yourself. Most people work for themselves.

You should really avoid all the things like rebate processing, data entry, surveys, blogs, or mlm or paypal pyramid schemes. All of them either make you next to no money or they’re a scam. The more legitimate ways of making money online are things like selling on ebay or outside of ebay or affiliate marketing or selling digital products. I’ve been working online for 3 years and I’ve never run across anything outside of those 4 things that really makes you enough money to live off.

But you should know the really hard thing about making money online isn’t finding the right way to do it (you can just copy how everyone else is doing it) it’s putting in the time. It’s harder than it sounds to actually sit infront of your computer for up to 6 hours a day and just work. It sounds easy enough until you sit down to do it. The hardest thing I always find is just focusing. So listening to the radio or music helps but then you’re being less productive with what you’re doing. And when you’re not actually in an office room it’s even harder. I’ve never really found the work I do hard just putting in the time. For me if I can’t focus it’s the difference between making $50 that day and making a few hundred. So there’s usually bad days and really good days. You have to find a balance.

Small Business Start Up Ideas: 3 Remarkable Business Ideas For The Aspiring Entrepreneur

If you’re thinking of starting your own business, then you’ve come to the right place. I’m here to give you the inside scoop on small business start up ideas that will help you get the dough rolling!

Don’t be intimidated though. Small business start up ideas are ideal especially for someone who doesn’t really have a lot of experience. If you’re ready to get your business up and running, read on!

1) Internet Business

The Internet has really changed the way people look at how things work. It has also opened up a lot of new opportunities for people interested in starting their own business.

One possible Small Business Start Up Idea is buying and selling pre-loved goods online. There is practically no capital needed. As long as you have a computer, an Internet connection and a camera, you’re all set!

It might come as a surprise to you that people love scouring the net for interesting goods. From designer bags to organic whatnot, you’ll never run out of things to sell.

But what’s even more amazing is that your products may not be physical in form, but people could still be buying them if they can solve their problems or satisfy their wants. I’m talking about e-books and information products.

2) Where’s The Party

Another small business start up idea is handling events. You don’t have to start out with a bang like the annual Thanksgiving parade. Instead, you can try your hand at small and simple events like a party for the book lovers in your neighborhood, your great-aunt Marge’s birthday or even your little brother’s school play.

Planning events isn’t only easy, it’s also a lot of fun. If you don’t feel like organizing events, why not try hosting them? Who knows? You just might be a natural!

3) Gift Wrapping

If you’re good with paper, then gift wrapping might be your calling. I know what you’re thinking. Gift wrapping is so easy that even a six-year old kid can do it. Why would people pay you good money to have their presents wrapped when they can do it themselves?

Well, everybody might be able to wrap a present but not everybody can do it well. You might be surprised to know how many people don’t really know how to wrap gifts well. This is where you come in. You can make your services available at the local grocery store or let word-of-mouth lead the way. Incorporate some “wow” factor in your service and you’ll get lots of customers.

These small business start up ideas don’t really require you to have a large capital. It’s something you can do on your own time, or delegate someone to do most of the tasks for you.

And a word of advice: Don’t let your frustrations get to you. Be patient, learn from your mistakes and you will achieve success!

Create Your Business Plan Program: Day 1

small business start up plan

small business start up plan
This year i plan to start a small business as well as a rental property, I have a few tax questions?

concerning my rental. I wanted to charge $750.00 monthly minus certain utilities included amounting to $150.00. So I have a proffit of $600.00 each month. Can I offset this proffit with the monthly mortgage payment of $600.00 (P&I )or can I just claim mortgage interest, insurance costs and depreciate the buliding over 30 years. Can I exspense any repairs against the profit or do I have to depreciate them. Example a new roof might cost 5-7 thousand dollars. If I have to depreciate that over 30 years that doesn’t amount to much but that sure was a lot to come up with now.
Concerning the business, I plan to start a home based carpentry business. I would like to spend roughly 20k – 30k on a workshop that will serve as a business hub at my physicall residence. I would prefere this over an in town based business for obvious reasons. Now can the business pay myself rent to use the bulding and claim this as a business exspense, and I claim mortgage intrest and depreciation for myself.

When renting out real estate, these are the expenses you can take to offset your costs: Mortgage Interest, Insurances, Utilities, costs of finding tenants (advertising fees, credit checks etc), repairs, depreciation of the building and any furniture and fixtures you have placed in the home.

You can expense repairs such as painting, fixing plumbing etc. If you replace something such as the carpet or a toilet, you have to depreciate that new asset you placed in your rental. Any capital improvements you put into the house should be depreciated over 15 years. The building can be depreciated over 27.5 years.

If your business uses a building you own, it can pay rent to you and you would claim it on Schedule E of your 1040. Any expenses you incur (not your business) would be deducted from the rental income you report on Schedule E. If the business pays for any of the expenses related to the rental, the business would deduct them and you’d put that income and deductions on Schedule C.
